Early on in my blogging career I wrote about a habit I picked up several Thanksgivings ago. As I think back to last Thanksgiving, there is only two things that I’ve done every day: drank coffee and wrote down 5 things that I was grateful for. Some guru of happiness recommended it and he was right.
Most often it is easy to come up with 5 and when pressed I have a few standbys like ‘that things are as they are’ and ‘that my family is healthy.’ There have been times when, sleepless and on the road that I have stared at the page and for those moments I sometimes employ ‘for getting paid today.’
I don’t want to over-play this hand. But it is a few moments of remembering that I have been lucky and in no way deserved all that I’ve gotten.
